Higurashi Shrine is home to Kagome Higurashi and her family, which includes her younger brother Sota, her mother, her paternal grandfather and their family cat Buyo. Kagome's family have been the keepers of the shrine for many generations.

Since there is very little income to be had, Kagome's grandfather is constantly trying to sell various artifacts, such as replicas of the legendary Shikon Jewel (the Jewel of Four Souls).

The shrine itself contains several buildings, including the main shrine, the Higurashi's house, storehouses containing various artifacts, and building enclosing the Bone Eater's Well, which serves as a portal for Kagome and InuYasha whenever they move between the Warring States Era and Kagome's time.

In the English manga, it is also called the Sunset Shrine.
